Weekend getaways are the hardest cheap trip: everyone wants the same four departure slots, so those slots price accordingly. The way out isn't a secret website - it's changing which weekend, which hours, and what counts as "the weekend".
Friday-out, Sunday-back is the single most demanded shape in short-haul travel: it fits every office job in the same way. Airlines know this and hold those departures in higher fare buckets from the day the schedule opens. The premium isn't uniform, though - it concentrates on Friday 16:00-21:00 outbound and Sunday 15:00-21:00 return. Move off those few hours and much of it evaporates.
If you can take any weekend in the next month or two, don't search one. Search the whole month with a 2-4 night range and a weekend constraint, and let the engine tell you which weekend is cheap. In WRVR, the Weekend pills (Fri / Sat / Sun, any combination) do exactly this: pick Fri+Sat and the search keeps only trips whose stay covers a Friday and a Saturday - across every weekend in your window at once. One weekend in the month is usually markedly cheaper than the others; a single-date search would never show you which.
A subtle trap in weekend planning: what is a "2-night trip"? If your flight leaves Thursday 23:50 and lands Friday 02:20, the calendar says you arrived Friday - but Thursday night was spent away, and you'll want the hotel room from that night. WRVR counts this the intuitive way: a pre-dawn landing (before 05:00) counts the night in progress, so Thursday 23:50 → Sunday reads as 3 nights, while a Friday daytime arrival on the same route reads as 2. When you filter by nights, that's the number being filtered - it matches what you'll actually book in hotels.
The cheapest weekend isn't a date trick, it's a destination trick: somewhere with high seat supply from your airport that particular weekend. Two ways to search that direction rather than guess:
Weekend trips are short, so fixed costs weigh heavily. A €30 saving that adds a connection is a bad trade on a 3-day trip. A €50 saving that moves you to a 06:00 departure costs you an evening out - maybe fine, maybe not. And the flight is often no longer the biggest line: two hotel nights in a capital city can exceed the airfare, which is an argument for destinations where the total is low, not the flight alone. Discovery-style search helps precisely because it makes the flight component comparable across twenty destinations at a glance.
